Meet Dr. Charlotte Marquis

Dr. Charlotte Marquis BVM&S (Hons.), MS, DACVAA, MRCVS, is a Boston native with a distinguished educational background. After graduating with honors from the University of Edinburgh in 2018, she completed a rotating internship at 1st Pet Veterinary Center in Phoenix, AZ, the following year. Dr. Marquis pursued a residency in veterinary anesthesia & analgesia at the University of Missouri (MU) and completed her training in 2022. During residency, Dr. Marquis anesthetized hundreds of elective and emergent anesthetic cases- her favorite patients including working K9s, venomous snakes, and birds of prey.

Since completing residency, Dr. Marquis has pursued additional qualifications, earning a master's degree from MU and becoming a Certified Veterinary Pain Practitioner (CVPP) in 2024. She is currently working toward a Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice with an Emphasis in Emergency & Critical Care (CertAVP ECC) from the Royal Veterinary College (UK).

Dr. Marquis works closely with all of our hospital departments and is passionate about collaborative care. Her clinical interests include locoregional anesthesia, critical care medicine, and teaching technicians and house officers. When she’s not on the clinic floor, Dr. Marquis enjoys traveling to meet veterinary technicians, assistants, and veterinarians in the greater Kansas City area.

The Importance of Anesthesia and Pain Management for Your Patients

Anesthesia is a discipline of veterinary medicine that combines unconsciousness, pain relief, and muscle relaxation. Anesthesia enables us to perform procedures such as imaging (CT, MRI, radiographs) and surgery without undue fear, anxiety, or stress for veterinary patients.

Before induction of general anesthesia, Dr. Marquis performs a thorough physical exam to assess the patient’s health and temperament. Bloodwork and imaging studies are sometimes performed to evaluate the patient’s overall health status. The anesthetic protocols is then tailored to the patient’s needs. Pre-anesthetic screening such as this allows the patient to get a personalized approach to perioperative care.

Comprehensive Monitoring for Optimal Safety

At MVES/OPVES, we utilize advanced anesthetic monitoring techniques similar to those used in human medical care. Our comprehensive monitoring includes:

● Electrocardiography (ECG)

● Pulse oximetry (SpO2)

● End-tidal capnography (ETCO2)

● Mechanical ventilation

● Oscillometric and arterial blood pressure measurement

● Central venous pressure monitoring

● Pulse waveform analysis

● Point-of-care ultrasound (aFAST, tFAST)

● Assessment of depth of anesthesia and comfort level throughout the procedure

Anesthetic monitoring ensures your pet is safe and comfortable from the moment they arrive until the time they leave our facility.
